September 29, 2013Sauk City, Wisconsin (September 15, 2013) – Maplewood Sauk Prairie is offering advanced negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to promote and enhance the healing of different types of wounds. The treatment uses a special vacuum dressing, which is carefully applied on patients by a skilled team composed of the Maplewood Sauk Prairie physical therapy department, nurses, and physicians, among others.
Specifically created to facilitate the healing of acute and chronic wounds, as well as first and second degree burns, NPWT involves the controlled application of sub-atmospheric pressure to the affected area. This is done through a sealed wound dressing, which is linked to a vacuum pump. Maplewood Sauk Prairie uses the 60050 V.A.C. Freedom Therapy Unit from KCI. This device offers easy operation, enhanced patient comfort, and consistent therapy delivery. The vacuum works by drawing out the fluid from the wound and increasing blood flow in the target area, hastening healing.
How long pressure should be applied differs, depending on the severity of the wound and the specific clinical objectives. The treatment starts with the fitting of the dressing or filler materials to the contours of the wound, covered with a non-adherent dressing film. This step is followed by the sealing of the overlying foam with a transparent film. A drainage tube is then connected to the dressing, while a vacuum tube is likewise attached to a canister by the side of the V.A.C. Freedom unit. This setup removes wound fluids, enhances blood circulation, and controls and eventually closes the wound.
A systematic review conducted in 2010 found that NPWT proved beneficial for patients suffering diabetic ulcers of the feet. The study concluded that the therapy is safe and aids the healing of chronic leg wounds associated with diabetes while “healing of other wounds may also be accelerated.”
